Why Risk It?
In Social Studies we have been studying the history of Washington. We recently began studying the period when pioneers/missionaries began traveling west towards what is now known as Oregon and Washington. Today, I introduced a journal project where you will pretend that you and your family are traveling on the Oregon Trail. As you know, the Oregon Trail was not an easy journey. It took several months and many people did not make it or were seriously injured along the way. Why risk it? Why did people choose to leave their homes for the "unknown" Oregon Territory? If you lived back then, do you think you would have done the journey to the west? Why or why not? Answer all of the questions in complete sentences.

ReplyDeleteI would risk it because even if many people died on the journey there were also people ailing in Independence. If I lived back then I would go to Oregon because of the good land and the money I would make.

I would risk it because it would be worth it once I got to Washington/Oregon because I would be making lots more money there and there would be more room for farming. If I were to go, I would have to hope for the best and bring plenty of medicene along. If the worst were to happen I would at least be traveling in a wagon train.

I would risk it, because people die all the time It does not mean that you will. I also would risk it because of the rich land, wet rain, and elavated mountains. The reason is mostly about the adveture it would take to get to the destination of Oreagan/Washington.

I would risk it because even though alot of people die doesn't mean that you will. Once you got there you would have a lot of land. You might even get rich if you went there. It would also be like an adventure going there passing alot of landmarks on your way.

People wanted to make the tough trip to Oregon because they had a chance to get free land. They all wanted to own their own land and they wanted adventure. I would risk it because I would want to own a lot of land. If you were a good farmer you could make a lot of money with all the land.

ReplyDeleteI would risk it because if you go to Washington Territory, you get more land, become free from slavery( if in slavery), and get jobs and become richer. It is a better life than being in slavery too. It might take a long time and you might die on the way but once you get there, you are basically free from anything.
ReplyDeleteThe one above is from #21 sorry.
ReplyDeleteI would risk it although a lot of people would die I will go because I might be succesful and get rich there. Along the way we would see all different places.

They might have risked it because they wanted free land of their own. They probably chose to leave their homes for adventure, land, to start or get a new life, run away from slavery(if you were a slave), or possibly to get rich. I would have done the trip west if I lived back then because I like taking risks.

I would risk the journey to get the free land. I believe that people left their homes for the free land and to be a pioneer in the new territory. I would make the journey, for sure, for the adventure of it all and to experience new places and new things.

I would risk it because there is a lot of land so you could get free land! I would not want to stay in Indapendence because alot of people died there because of illness. but in Oregon country you could get alot of food and medicine. You could get away from slavery. You also can get rich! So if I lived in the west I would take the risk.

Back in 1854 people risked their life traveling the Oregon trail because back in Indepedence people coudn't breath that well because the sky had a lot of dust and people heard that in Oregon the air and sky was clear and beautiful. Also people didn't like their life back south so they traveled west so they could start a new life in Oregon teretory. Finnaly people told great storys about Oregon and how the grass was green there was forest with trees as tall as you could see and best of all no more coughing because the sky was crystal clear.

I would not risk it because I think it was too dangerous. Many people died on the Oregon Trail. I would be afraid to risk my family on this trip, and I would not want to travel that far without my family.
